Water coolers and water filters may have emerged relatively lately in history, but over the centuries the availability of clean drinking water was always essential to survival. Those who had clean fresh water sources were simply more likely to survive and, in generally, thrive. Water was and is essential for the human body to function, as well as for agriculture, sanitation, and crop development. Today, the quest for clean healthy water supplied conveniently and efficiently remains an active human endeavour, and water filters and today’s filtered water coolers are right up there in this quest.
Both ancient Sanskrit and Egyptian writings reveal practices for keeping water pure and free of germs. These methods included boiling the water, heating it with the sun's hot rays and even dipping very hot irons into the water to purify it. One early water filtration method used course gravel and sand as the filter system for very hot water, which was passed through it and was then allowed to cool.
Water filters have been used as a method for purifying water as far back as ancient Greece. Grecians developed a simple water filter, now known as the Hippocratic Sleeve – which consisted of a cloth sleeve through which water was poured and drained out the other side. Presumed to have been designed by Hippocrates of ancient Greece, the idea of the Hippocratic Sleeve method has evolved into the highly sophisticated water filters and methods used in conjunction with today’s filtered water coolers that you find in the modern office.
Water coolers fitted with water filters and plumbed into the mains water supply are now the preferred method of office water filtration by millions of companies, because they remove contaminants to produce clean tasting drinking water, are able to be conveniently located amongst staff, and are generally much more cost-effective than bottled water coolers. For function and efficiency, water filters have stood the test of time, and for today’s value, look like they’ll be looking after office water coolers for some time yet!
The days of the bottled water cooler are long gone and thank goodness for that – changing out those heavy water bottles was a chore that no one enjoyed. Plus, storing all the water bottles was a hassle, and someone had to be responsible for remembering to re-order the water bottles in time. It's scary to note that those bottles were also notorious for containing bacteria growth.
When the water bottles were empty, however, the real challenge began because they had to be hauled back out of the office and stored again. They were also made of plastic and had to be recycled, sent back to the water company for reuse, or more likely disposed. Then, the entire process began all over again – order more water, have it delivered and stored, and every time the water bottle was empty someone had to haul each heavy bottle out of storage and lift it onto the water cooler stand. All of these factors made bottled water coolers far more work than was necessary.
